Wow, that's... that's not an exaggeration. Tennessee Republicans have taken the mask off, and are literally making it a felony (plus removal from office) for any representative in any county, city, etc. to cast a vote in favor of certain things.

Not merely "the state declares cities may not do X", which would be comparatively normal... No, these extremists are trying to use the power of the state to crush individuals for casting votes, even symbolic protest ones.

> SECTION 6. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 7-68-103, is amended by designating the existing language as subsection (a) and adding the following new subsection (b):

> (b) It is unlawful for an official to violate subsection (a). A violation of subsection (a) is a Class E felony. For purposes of this subsection (b), each official who, in their capacity as a member of the governing body of a local government, votes in the affirmative to adopt a sanctuary policy is in violation of this section.

If this passes judicial scrutiny then would it be much of a reach to have a law prohibiting citizens from voting for certain ballot propositions and candidates?

You are basically making a writing prompt for a very weird America that I can’t actually imagine. My imagination may be fried from current and past America.

I do know it’s scary. I just don’t know what to do.

Consider attending some local political meetups. You'll find lots of people fervently in favor of this sort of thing.

Not a historian, but I imagine it would be worthwhile to create social-networks of trusted opposition, secure ways to communicate, and publishing outlets for information in advance, rather than wishing they were there once there's the Gestapo and networks of informants.

Even in not-so-dark times, it'll be helpful when companies (i.e. Instagram, today) are shadow-banning content (i.e. abortion resources) in order to get favorable treatment from a corrupt executive branch. You'll have some other network to find information from.

It's our America - it's here, it passed, 7 million people live under that law. The judicial scrutiny part may or not repeal the law after years of litigation at great personal cost.
